Sean Dyche is delighted Everton can move forward after the club were handed back four of their 10 deducted points – but says any future punishments must be dished out in the summer, not the middle of the season.

Multiple charges have cast a shadow over the Premier League this season, and created uncertainty for clubs, after Everton were docked 10 points in November for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR). The Goodison club lost £19.5million more than the permitted £105m over a three-year period. Their punishment was reduced to six points on appeal this week.

‘We’re pleased we have got something back, obviously,’ said Dyche. ‘You are always greedy and want more but the points the club put forward have been listened to and we have got the four back. We will take that and now it brings clarity to the situation.

‘That is good for us and the players but good for all actually. Getting four back is some form of – boost isn’t the right word – but the adjustment to the table which is now apparent was needed.

‘We wanted the points back but the main thing was to bring clarity.’

Now Nottingham Forest are set for a near-certain points deduction if an independent commission finds them guilty of similar breaches this month, while Everton face another rap for a second charge covering a different three-year period.

With appeals to follow, it is highly likely there will be a cloud of confusion looming over the relegation race in the final weeks of the season, with Everton and Forest’s future potentially decided in the courts. That, of course, will have a knock-on effect for clubs such as struggling Luton.

‘From an open, common sense view, I would suggest – however these appeals go in the future – they can’t judge you now in the middle of the season,’ added Dyche.

‘The fine or sanction, if they can find a way of doing it, it’s better to do it at the end of the season, going into the next.

‘That’s a much more level playing field for the whole league. Any sanction, it won’t be taken off you there and then, it’ll be the new season.

‘So at the end of this season, let’s imagine, bang, you’ve been hit with that, everyone knows it, now get yourself ready.’
