  • Manchester City will face off with Premier League over 115 alleged breaches
  • The trial is expected to begin in the late autumn of next year

Ian Wright has been praised by fans for addressing ‘the elephant in the room’ during a Sky Sports segment on Pep Guardiola‘s achievements as Manchester City boss.

The club were hit with 115 charges relating to financial information regarding revenue, details of manager and player remuneration, UEFA regulations, profitability and sustainability and co-operation with the Premier League‘s investigations in February 2023.

They will have their day in court to defend themselves against the charges. The specific date has not been made public.

Following Sunday’s clash between Liverpool and City, Wright and Jamie Carragher discussed the legacies of the two managers, with the Arsenal legend keen to mention the uncertainty that still hangs over the heads of those associated with the defending champions.

‘We can’t speak about City without speaking about the fact that there’s 115 charges around them.’ He said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

‘The one thing I would like more than anything else is for that to be gone from City so that you can give the team and the manager the love that they deserve.

‘Because when you speak about them, there’s an elephant in the room. With this rivalry, you want to speak about them without saying “yeah. but”.

‘It’s not fair on the players or the club so the sooner that’s gone the better.’

Wright’s comments quickly drew praise from fans – mainly those of the Liverpool and Arsenal persuasion – on social media, with several lauding the former striker for highlighting the situation.

‘Honestly [Ian Wright] is a brilliant pundit,’ One fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter. ‘So well spoken, points articulated expertly and he still manages to remain unbiased and relatable This is the type of coverage we want.’

Another said: ‘Fair f***ing play to him. He’ll get pelters for it but he’s right.

‘First fella to mention it on sky,’ wrote a third, Another added: ‘Finally sky are acknowledging it.’

Mail Sport understands that the Premier League and Manchester City have agreed a date at which they will face off in front of an independent panel in arguably the biggest hearing in the competition’s history.

Those with knowledge of the situation believe that a conclusion may not follow until the end of next season – which is when City boss Guardiola’s current contract is due to expire.
