CHRIS SUTTON: Scott McTominay’s naughty tackle on Brighton’s Moises Caicedo should have earned him a red card in Man United’s shock home loss… and how on earth was Lisandro Martinez’s foul on Danny Welbeck not a penalty?

  • Man United’s 2-1 loss to Brighton also saw a poor display from the officials
  • Scott McTominay easily could have saw red for a challenge on Moises Caicedo
  • And I can’t understand how Martinez’s foul on Welbeck wasn’t a penalty

Manchester United suffered defeat in their opening Premier League game and it was also a poor performance from the officials on the day.

They got a couple of big calls wrong and Sportsmail’s Chris Sutton is here to talk you through them.

MCTOMINAY SHOULD HAVE SEEN RED FOR NAUGHTY TACKLE

In today’s game, this is a red card.

Scott McTominay will say momentum took him into Moises Caicedo and that he had no time to move his foot.

But it looked to me like McTominay knew he no longer had control of the ball and so he followed through in his challenge.

It was naughty. Any player on the receiving end of a tackle like this will be asking the referee why he did not show a red

AND HOW ON EARTH WAS THIS PENALTY NOT GIVEN?

How this was not a penalty is beyond me.

Lisandro Martinez may be small for a centre back, but surely the VAR bar is not set so high that he is beneath it.

Martinez barges into the back of Danny Welbeck, who did well to get his body between the ball and his opponent, like any good striker should. He was clearly fouled, so why were United allowed to get away with this?
