Sportsmail understands the Brazil international is to sign a new three-year deal at Villa Park to cement his position as one of the club’s key players.

But talks over an extension are at an advanced stage with the expectancy now that the 24-year-old will sign fresh terms to end uncertainty over his future.

Luiz has been a regular for the club since his arrival from Manchester City in 2019 and news of his deal will come as a big fillip for Gerrard as the new season gets underway.

The Brazilian international has featured 112 times for Villa since his £15million switch, scoring five and assisting a further eight times from his deep-lying midfield role.

He will also be keen to reintegrate himself with the national set up with the World Cup in Qatar around the corner, having last featured for Brazil in their qualifying campaign in October 2021 against Uruguay.
