Manchester United and England have been handed another injury blow as Harry Maguire was sent for a scan following his early substitution in the Three Lions’ 1-0 defeat to Brazil.

Maguire joins the list of national team casualties after Manchester City‘s Kyle Walker limped off during the match on Saturday.

The lynchpin defender’s departure during the second-half prompted concern, leading to a subsequent scan on Sunday.

Despite Gareth Southgate‘s initial decision to substitute Maguire, alongside Ben Chilwell, as a precaution, the Man United star has been ruled out of Tuesday’s friendly against Belgium.

He has also returned to his club, as Walker has, with a spate of injuries hitting Southgate’s squad.

The news will leave United manager Erik ten Hag anxious, especially with crucial upcoming fixtures ahead, starting with Saturday’s Premier League visit to Brentford.

Maguire’s recent appearance for club or country was marred by his early exit after just 67 minutes, marking his first start since February 24.

His absence further adds to United’s defensive woes, already missing players like Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, and Tyrell Malacia.

Maguire had only recently returned from a groin injury that sidelined him for five games over Christmas.

In addition to Maguire, there are also concerns over Walker, who was only capable of playing the first 20 minutes of the tie.

After being replaced by Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, the Man City right-back underwent a scan, with a hamstring issue suspected.

The 1-0 defeat also witnessed notable absentees such as Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, while Harry Kane is now undergoing treatment at Bayern Munich for an ankle problem after watching the match from the sidelines.

However, England’s options for the upcoming match against Belgium could be bolstered by the return of Jordan Henderson and Cole Palmer, both of whom have been back in training since Saturday.

Brazil secured a victory against England with super-sub Endrick scoring the only goal of the game.

Southgate was keen to stress that he was happy with his team’s overall performance, despite Saturday night’s result ending a 21-game unbeaten run at Wembley.

‘With 15 minutes to go there were lots of changes and I think at the point the crowd were really pleased with the performance,’ the manger said after the final whistel.

‘Of course when you lose the game it turns negative but we have to keep the context with that.’
