‘Disgraceful’ Andre Onana yelled at Harry Maguire ‘to win over Man United fans’, claims Jamie Carragher, as he pinpoints how power struggle with Cristiano Ronaldo built up the ‘undermining’ of him

  • Harry Maguire scored an own goal during England’s 3-1 win over Scotland
  • Jamie Carragher’s urged Gareth Southgate to drop him ‘for his own protection’

Andre Onana ‘disgracefully’ yelled at Harry Maguire in preseason in an attempt to win over the Manchester United fans after his £47million move from Inter Milan, Jamie Carragher has claimed.

Maguire, who has been stripped of captaincy at Old Trafford and continued to struggle for regular game time under Erik ten Hag this season, endured another unfortunate moment on international duty on Tuesday as he scored an own goal against Scotland during England’s 3-1 win at Hampden Park.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has continually leapt to Maguire’s defence despite his lack of minutes at Old Trafford, insisting it was an ‘absolute joke’ that fans booed him on Tuesday.

But the own goal only piles more pressure on Southgate’s decision to continue selecting him ahead of England’s Euro 2024 campaign in Germany next summer.

Admitting he feels sorry for Maguire, Liverpool legend Carragher urged Southgate to drop the centre-back ‘for his own protection’ until his career turns a corner at Manchester United or elsewhere.

Maguire has often been a scapegoat for both Manchester United and England fans over the last few seasons, and Carragher claims that Onana deliberately tried to endear himself to Red Devils supporters by ‘disgracefully’ yelling at him in preseason.

Onana made his frustrations known during United’s 3-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund in July and gave his defender an earful for giving away possession and allowing the opposition in on goal.

In his column for The Telegraph, Carragher said: ‘Manchester United fans jeered Maguire during pre-season games in 2022 and 2023.

‘One of the most distasteful incidents of all occurred during the friendly with Borussia Dortmund in July, when new signing Andre Onana started yelling at Maguire, in my view disgracefully playing to the gallery to endear himself to United fans.

‘I watched that in disbelief, but it said everything about what has gone wrong. Maguire was still the club captain then. He should have reacted furiously, put Onana in his box and demanded respect.

‘Instead, he has the persona of someone whose confidence and authority is utterly broken.’

Carragher also believes Maguire’s demise as captain ‘gained momentum’ while Red Devils legend Cristiano Ronaldo was at the club following his return in 2021.

‘It was a similar story when Cristiano Ronaldo returned and reports emerged about power struggles in the United dressing room,’ he added. ‘That is when the undermining of Maguire gained momentum.’

United paid £80m to lure Maguire from Leicester in 2019, but now the centre-back is way down the pecking order with Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof all ahead of him under Ten Hag.

The England star was heavily linked with West Ham throughout the summer transfer window, but the defender ultimately turned down the move.

According to Carragher, Maguire leaving Old Trafford to join the Hammers would have given him a perfect chance to win back respect.

‘He missed the opportunity to start landing a few punches when he turned down West Ham in the summer,’ the former Reds defender said.

‘David Moyes would have had the perfect manager in an ideal team for Maguire’s attributes. I am sure he would have been a success there.’
