Manchester United transfer target Cody Gakpo has revealed he will consider staying at PSV if the Dutch side beat Rangers in their Champions League play-off this month.

Erik ten Hag turned his attention to the 23-year-old Dutchman after missing out on his ex-Ajax colleague Antony, but it seems a lack of Champions League football could once again blight the Red Devils’ transfer plans.

PSV have yet to receive a formal bid from Man United for the highly-rated winger but Ten Hag’s interest has forced Gakpo to consider his future beyond Eindhoven.

The Eredivisie runners-up booked their place in the final stage of the Champions League play-offs with a 4-3 aggregate win over Monaco on Tuesday and they will now play Rangers for a spot in the competition’s group stage.

Despite attracting interest from Old Trafford, Gakpo insisted he would be more likely to stay in Eindhoven should PSV qualify.

‘We must first focus on and try to make it to the Champions League,’ Gakpo told ESPN after the match.

The Manchester United transfer target admitted: ‘There is definitely a chance that I will stay’

‘Then it is more likely that I will stay. I don’t think I have said anywhere that I am leaving, so there is definitely a chance that I will stay.

‘I’m open for a cup of coffee with the management – or coffee for them and water for me. We’ll see how it goes.’

Should Gakpo decide to take up arms with Ten Hag in Manchester, he would mark the Red Devils’ third Eredivisie-based signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Feyenoord left back Tyrell Malacia and Ajax centre back Lisandro Martinez.

The Dutch head coach is eager to bolster his attacking line having suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Brighton during his first Premier League match in charge.

With Cristiano Ronaldo actively pursuing an exit and Anthony Martial sidelined through injury, Ten Hag would benefit hugely from an additional attacking option to call upon.

Meanwhile, ex-Red Devils star and PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will be keen to keep the winger in Eindhoven, following his breakthrough last season.

The Dutch international notched 12 goals and 13 assists in just 27 Eredivisie appearances last campaign.
