PSG boss Christophe Galtier has confirmed that Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi will depart the club this summer after three years in the French capital.

Icardi has increasingly found himself on the fringes of the first team at the Parc des Princes, and made just ten Ligue 1 starts last season as PSG romped to an eighth league title in the last ten years.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of PSG’s game against Montpellier, Galtier explained his stance on the player’s future.

‘His absence last weekend was linked to a purely sporting choice,’ said Galtier. I saw Mauro at the beginning of the week to tell him that I will restrict the group and I don’t want to work with 25 outfield players, it’s not possible to have players on the sides, I won’t repeat myself.’

Despite remaining firm about his desire to see Icardi leave the club for pastures new this summer, Galtier insisted that PSG would support the player in finding his next club:

‘The club is working closely with Mauro to find the best possible solution. Mauro has had very little playing time in the last few seasons, I think it is important for him to get back on track. I think it is important for him to get back into the game.’

‘I think that in the interest of Mauro and also in the interest of the club, we should find the best possible compromise, that is to say, a club where he can express his qualities.’ He added.

The Argentinian has endured a difficult stint in Paris, with rampant speculation around his personal life seeming to bleed into his performances on the pitch.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in offering the 29-year-old a lifeline by bringing him to Old Trafford on a loan deal with the option for a permanent move, with Erik ten Hag looking to bolster his attacking options amidst Cristiano Ronaldo’s desire to leave the club.
