Callum Wilson will undergo surgery after damaging his pectoral tendon and will be sidelined for nine to 12 weeks, in the latest major injury blow to hit Newcastle.

Mail Sport understands the striker will be operated on this week and that could rule him out until early May, meaning he misses the majority of the campaign. The best-case scenario is a return in April.

Either way, it is almost certain he will not feature in Newcastle’s next 10 fixtures and, if he does not play again this season, it could mean Wilson has played his last game for the club, given his contract will have 12 months to run come the summer. We understand there is interest from abroad, including Saudi Arabia.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury during last weekend’s 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest after getting into a tangle with a defender late in the game, and he left the pitch using his shirt as a sling.

We reported on Tuesday morning that Newcastle were hopeful Wilson could manage the pain and had not ruled him out of Saturday’s visit of Bournemouth.

However, further investigation has revealed that surgery is needed, robbing Eddie Howe of a player he was hoping would make a major impact in the coming weeks after returning to the starting XI for the first time since before Christmas at Forest.

Wilson’s issue is with his pec, the chest muscle that connects to the bones of the upper arm and shoulder. He had only just recovered from a calf problem.

He will now miss England’s March friendlies and the setback is likely to impact significantly on his chances of making the squad for Euro 2024.

In better news for Newcastle, striker Alexander Isak is close to a return after a groin layoff and has an outside chance of making the squad this weekend.
