A football fan stepped in to help officiate a League One clash on Tuesday night after the referee had sustained a head injury.

The incident occurred just 10 minutes into the second half during Wigan’s match against Wycombe at the DW Stadium.

Referee Adam Herczeg was caught sandwiched between two players in the middle of the field in what was a nasty collision and suffered a head injury.

The game was subsequently delayed by 20 minutes with Herczeg receiving treatment on the field.

Unfortunately he was not able to continue with officials subsequently changing roles, with Herczeg being replaced in the middle by fourth official Steven Rushden.

A qualified referee was subsequently found in the crowd, with the man arriving on the touchline to stand in as the emergency official.

One fan on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: ‘Both teams are beginning to warm up again as a volunteer referee emerges from the tunnel.

‘”We got a ref” rings out from the Wigan fans. 15 minutes plus added time not out of the question here.’

With the game goalless at the 90 minute mark, an additional 20 minutes of injury time was added on to the clock.

But there was drama in the dying embers of the match, as Charlie Hughes arrived to tap in a rebound to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory.

The victory is Wigan’s second successive win on the bounce, with the Latics climbing to 11th in the league table.

Wycombe, meanwhile stay 17th in the table, having now failed to win in their last two matches.
