West Ham technical director Tim Steidten has responded to reports linking him with the vacant sporting director role at Liverpool, claiming ‘it’s an honour’ to be considered by the Reds.

The 44-year-old has been one of the names rumoured to be in the frame to take over from Jorge Schmadtke, who ended his short stint at the club last month.

Steidten has only been with the Hammers since last summer but has already made a lasting impression with the signing of Mohammed Kudus from Ajax.

However, as Mail Sport reported in August, there were almost immediate tensions between himself and David Moyes over the recruitment strategy at the London club.

Steidten, who previously worked at Bayer Leverkusen, broke his silence on the links to Liverpool, admitting his pride to be one of the candidates, though he revealed there has been no contact as yet.

‘I’ve heard that I am supposed to be on the list at Liverpool,’ he told Sky Germany. ‘It is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so it’s an honour. But so far nobody from Liverpool has contacted me.

‘I generally feel very comfortable at West Ham. I quickly realised how intense this league is. Accordingly, we signed the right players in the last transfer windows. The squad is strong, so we can achieve our goals.

‘I am looking forward to the next few weeks and months until the end of the season. Of course, we are already planning the next window (at West Ham). What happens in the future, we will see.’

Steidten has a strong connection to the leading candidate to take over from Jurgen Klopp at the Reds’ helm, Xabi Alonso.

Having previously worked at the German club and proving influential in the appointment of Alonso in 2022, fans will be quick to connect the dots with both positions needing to be filled at Anfield this summer.

A former player, Steidten recruited players such as Moussa Diaby, Jeremie Frimpong and Piero Hincapie – the latter two have been integral in Leverkusen’s title push this season.

Steidten made his start at Werder Bremen where he again showed his eye for a player with the additions of Serge Gnabry and Kevin De Bruyne.
