Toronto’s ‘anti-capitalist’ cafe shuts down after one year in business : INTERNEWSCAST

An anti-capitalist café in Toronto where patrons would pay what they can has shut down after a year in business due to failing to make enough money.

Owners of The Anarchist, which opened in March 2022 and had been described as an ‘anti-capitalist, anti-colonial cafe, shop and radical community space on stolen land,’ said the coffee shop will close its doors on May 30.

‘Unfortunately, the lack of generational wealth/seed capital from ethically bankrupt sources left me unable to weather the quiet winter season, or to grow in the ways needed to be sustainable longer-term,’ owner Gabriel Sims-Fewer wrote.

Sims-Fewer ended his announcement to patrons by writing: ‘F*** the rich. F*** the police. F*** the state. F*** the colonial death camp we call ‘Canada.”

In his message, the shop owner said that his cafe had been successful in every way he hoped and that is gave him ‘so much inspiration and education.’

Sims-Fewer also wrote that he plans to use that new knowledge in future projects.

‘It’s been an amazing experience, connecting with so many great community members, sparking desperately needed debate, raising the blood pressure of Conservatives (that includes you, ‘anarcho-capitalists’ and ‘Libertarians’),’ he wrote.

‘Fulfilling the dream of most service workers by not having to tolerate the presence of professional class-traitors (pigs and military), and experimenting with living and working in ways that don’t enthusiastically embrace the pure misanthropy of Capitalism,’ Sims-Fewer continued.

The shop had honed-in on a ‘pay what you can model’ that had been criticized by some throughout its year-long endeavor.

Higher-priced drinks helped to subsidize the shop, according to its website.

Critics of the scheme complained that it was wrong to charge more for inexpensive drinks just to help cover the costs where others were not contributing.

In September, the cafe’s owner also came under fire and was called an ‘arse’ on Instagram after making an post regarding Queen Elizabeth’s death.

‘Still closed, but will post soon as I’m fit for work. At least a royal parasite died,’ The Anarchist’s Instagram page posted on September 8.

They also posted less than a week after Her Majesty’s death: ‘The Queen was s**t, and should have died sooner.’

In addition to the statement posted to their website, the cafe’s Instagram page also shared the news on May 10.

The post received dozens of comments from supporters and adversaries. ‘Good riddance,’ responded one Instagram user.

‘Devastating news! Will miss you very much!’ another commented. ‘Are we gonna torch the place or nah no farewell burn?’ one person wrote.

‘I’m so sorry, f**k capitalism,’ added another.
